5.21.13 Coalition Meeting Notes

Here are the notes and updates from our last meeting. A huge thank you to Rachel @ The Enough Project for SKYPEing in, we are always grateful for the support Enough gives us.

Our next meeting in Tuesday, JUNE 18 at Swanson, Thomas, Coon and Newton, see you at 6:00pm!

UPDATES:

Conflict Free City Iniative (CFCI) Portland
Our CFCI team had a successful meeting with the City of Portland's Procurement Officer & Manager who provided some very helpful ways to make our Conflict Free City Initiative more than just a feel good resolution. Nice to receive concrete feedback. More work to be done, we are busying helping to push through some ideas for a pilot program and a proposal for the Multnomah Human Rights Advisory Commission (HRC)  to support our resolution. Anything worth doing requires hard work. Stay tuned!
CFCI Beaverton
Our CFCI team was able to meet with Beaverton's Mayor, Denny Doyle, who fully supports our Conflict Free City Initiative. Soon, with the help of Mayor Doyle, our CFCI Beaverton Resolution will be put before the Beaverton's council members for a vote. Stay tuned as we'll need OCH members to come to the meeting to show their support!
Conserve for Congo
We voted on and decided to place this initiative on hold as we continue to move forward at a rapid pace our CFCI cities - soon to be added Hillsboro, Willsonville and Salem - and policy work. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns regarding this decision.

H.R. 131 Concerns the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the need for international efforts toward long-term peace, stability, and observance of human rights. The resolution has recently been introduced that urges increased engagement by the U.S. government to bring long-term peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo. By passing this resolution, Congress can pressure the Obama Administration to prioritize eastern Congo. As of early June, the resolution has 60 sponsors, but we need to double that to help the bill pass and demonstrate the strength of Congressional support for peace in eastern Congo. We need your support. By becoming a cosponsor of H. Res. 131, you demonstrate to me and other similar constituents that a peaceful end to the crisis in eastern Congo is a priority.  This issue matters to me and our community. If you find that you cannot co-sponsor the resolution, I do hope you will head the voice of your continuants and choose in favor of passing when the vote comes forth.

S.Res 144
 - introduced only
 - need co-sponsors, letter (SRes144) attached please print the letter and sign or let me know you would like to be a signer on ours. You can also copy the language and send out via your organization.
